Divya

Book two · Chennai · out soon

On the night of her marriage, Divya leaves home in her husband's car. She takes a gun nobody knew she owned.

A Chennai policeman keeps working a file his own station closed. An old swami on the bank of the Ganga teaches that nothing a person holds ever belonged to them. Whatever went wrong in that flat is covered by no law, and it was running long before Divya drew breath.

I write thrillers set in the places most Western writers drive past — the Andaman Islands, the back streets of Chennai, the wiring under a rising Asia.

Engineers, policemen, con men and ordinary families who find out how the system actually runs, usually a few hours too late. The research is real. The people are not. Most of the time.

Two hundred thousand tonnes of basalt, removed from the top down with hand tools, in eighteen years. The arithmetic of the Kailasa Temple does not close, and that is the interesting part.

That is the only post so far. The next few are half-written: the piracy networks behind Divya, and what got cut from the swami's chapters. The newsletter goes out when each one lands.
