The temple that shouldn't exist
On lost engineering traditions, impossible tonnages, and the question we are afraid to ask: what if we have forgotten more than we ever learned?
There is a temple in Maharashtra that defies explanation. Not because it is old, though it is, or because it is beautiful, though it is, but because of what is missing.
The Kailasa Temple at Ellora was carved from a single cliff face sometime around 760 CE. When I say carved, I mean someone took a mountain and removed everything that was not a temple. Top to bottom. Basement to roof.
They removed roughly 200,000 tonnes of solid rock to do it.
Let me put that in perspective. A modern quarry using dynamite, bulldozers and hydraulic excavators can remove about 1,000 to 1,500 tonnes a day under ideal conditions. At that rate the Kailasa Temple would take 133 days of continuous work.
Except they did not have dynamite. Or bulldozers. Or hydraulics.
They had chisels, and hammers, and, if the traditional accounts are right, about eighteen years to finish the job. That is thirty tonnes of rock a day, every day, for eighteen years, with hand tools.
The maths does not close
I am an engineer by training, so I did the calculation the way engineers do: badly, with a lot of assumptions, but well enough to know when something smells wrong.
Be generous. Say they had 500 workers on site at any time, a large crew for eighth-century India. That is sixty kilograms of rock per worker per day. Not carved. Not shaped. Not transported. Just removed and discarded somewhere down the cliff. Every day, for 6,570 days straight.
Double the workforce to a thousand and each worker only has to shift thirty kilograms a day. That is still hauling a small child's weight in shattered basalt down a cliff face, day in and day out, while someone else is carving three-storey pillars and life-size elephants out of what is left. And we have not talked about the basement levels yet.
The Sigiriya problem
You know what else should not exist? Sigiriya, in Sri Lanka. A two-hundred-metre rock fortress built around 480 CE. Not built on top of a rock, which would be pedestrian. This one has its palace carved into the rock, with water gardens at the base, ramparts halfway up, and a citadel at the summit that required hauling every stone, every brick and every ounce of plaster up sheer cliff walls.
The hydraulics alone are remarkable: pressurised fountains that still work fifteen hundred years later, with no pumps. Just gravity and judgement.
And the same culture left no written record of how it was done. No drawings. No engineering treatises. It is as if someone built the Hoover Dam and forgot to mention it.
The uncomfortable question
Here is an idea that will make archaeologists wince. What if there was a systematic engineering tradition in ancient India and Sri Lanka, one sophisticated enough to move mountains with pre-industrial tools, and we lost it?
Not lost like misplacing your keys. Lost like the Library of Alexandria. Lost like Greek fire. Lost like Roman concrete, which we only worked out again in the twenty-first century, two thousand years late.
What if the knowledge to build Kailasa and Sigiriya was neither mystical nor alien, but simply written down on materials that did not survive? Palm leaf rots in a century. Oral traditions die with their last speaker. If your entire engineering corpus sits on perishable media and your civilisation takes a few hard knocks — invasions, famines, a shifting climate — you can go from carving mountains to forgetting how to read in two generations.
The Silurian hypothesis
Here is where it gets strange. There is a thought experiment in climate science called the Silurian hypothesis. The name comes from Doctor Who; the question is serious.
If an industrial civilisation existed on Earth fifty million years ago, would we know?
Fifty million years is a long time. Continents drift. Mountains rise and erode. Coastlines drown and resurface. What survives?
Not much. Plastics degrade in centuries. Steel rusts into oxide dust. Concrete crumbles. Cities built on coastlines, which is where most are, get swallowed by subduction. Even radioactive waste, the thing we assume will haunt the Earth forever, decays or ends up under kilometres of sediment.
What is left is subtle: odd carbon isotope ratios in ancient rock, unexplained spikes in rare earth elements, perhaps some synthetic molecules trapped in deep ice.
But a temple carved into a mountain? A palace cut into a rock? Those could survive. And if we found them with no context for the people who built them, we would look at the arithmetic and think: this should not be possible.
The canon we forgot
I do not actually think the Kailasa Temple was built by a lost fifty-million-year-old civilisation, though it would make a fine novel.
But I do think we underestimate how much knowledge humanity has lost, and overestimate how much we have always known. Damascus steel. Roman aqueducts. The Antikythera mechanism, a two-thousand-year-old analogue computer. Viking sunstones. Chinese earthquake detectors from 132 CE. And Kailasa, and Sigiriya, and dozens of other structures that make modern engineers scratch their heads.
Maybe the answer is not aliens or magic or ancient astronauts. Maybe the answer is that they knew things, they wrote them down, and the books burned.
The canon we are building
The hopeful flip side: we live in an age where knowledge is harder to lose. Every Wikipedia edit, every arXiv preprint, every repository, every answered question, every video on building a forge in your garden. A distributed, redundant, globally reachable canon that does not depend on one library in Alexandria or one monastery in Timbuktu.
When future archaeologists dig through our digital strata, they will not have to guess how we carved temples. They will have the CAD files.
But they might still wonder why we stopped. Why the people who built Kailasa did not build a hundred more. Why the engineers who designed Sigiriya's hydraulics did not pass that knowledge down in a form that survived. And why, having seen their silence, we are so confident it will not happen to us.
Coda: the trace that survives
If a civilisation existed fifty million years ago, what trace would survive? Probably not cities. Probably not books. Probably not monuments.
But carved mountains? Basalt temples cut into cliffs? Structures so massive and so simple that they outlast everything else? Those might.
And if you were a member of that lost civilisation, and you knew your world was ending, and you wanted to leave a message that would outlast continents —
What would you carve into a mountain?
